Jesus knew how His disciples were feeling in the depths of their hearts. He knew they were plunging into a black depression brought on by loneliness. So with infinite tenderness, he gently probed, “Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief” (John 16:15-16). They were grieving because He was leaving them—He was going…! They must have been anxious to know where, but what did it really matter? Wherever it was, it was, it was away from them, and that’s all they could focus on at the moment. He would be gone! And Jesus knew the unspoken questions on their minds and the unexpressed feelings in their hearts! He understood!
In your loneliness, do you long for—even dream of—someone who would understand you to such depth that he would know what you were thinking and what you were feeling without your having to say a word? Someone who would tenderly look into your eyes and you would know that he knew—everything!
Does your loneliness stem from the fact that you feel unknown? Or misunderstood? Or ignored? Then you need Jesus—and you need more of His nearness in your loneliness, because Jesus knows you, He understands you, and you have His undivided attention.
Failures
What is something we all have but don’t like? Failures! We are human and we all make mistakes. Sometimes we fail even when we did everything right.
”All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away”…Isaiah 64:6
“He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return”…Psalm 79:39
“I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out”…Romans 7:18
“I know, O LORD, that a man’s life is not for man to direct his steps”…Jeremiah 10:23
“For he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust”…..Psalm 103:14
But remember: Jesus never fails!
Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”…Matthew 19:26
