The Greek word translated
“complainer” means literally “one who is discontented with his lot in life.” It
is akin to the word grumbler. Complaining is certainly not a fruit of the
Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and, in fact, is detrimental to the peace, joy, and
patience that come from the Spirit. For the Christian, complaining is
destructive and debilitating personally and only serves to make our witness to
the world more difficult. Who, for instance, would be attracted to a religion
whose adherents are dissatisfied with life and who continually grumble and
complain?
Bible verses about complaining.
Exodus 16:8 - Also Moses said,
“This shall be seen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in
the morning bread to the full; for the Lord hears your complaints which you
make against Him. And what are we? Your complaints are not against us but
against the Lord.”
Numbers 21:5 - And the people
spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt
to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul
loathes this worthless bread.”
Psalm 64:1- Hear my voice, O God,
in my meditation; Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
Jonah 4:1-3 - But it displeased
Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. So he prayed to the Lord, and said,
“Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I
fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful
God, slow to anger and abundant in loving-kindness, One who relents from doing
harm. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for
me to die than to live!”
Matthew 12:2 - And when the
Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not
lawful to do on the Sabbath!”
John 6:41-43 - The Jews then
complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from
heaven.” And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and
mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
Jesus therefore answered and said
to them, “Do not murmur among yourselves.
Don’t listen to gossip
1 Samuel 24:9 – He said to Saul,
Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you?”
