Bible Guide – Genesis
As its name implies this book is about origins or beginnings – of the universe, of the different nations, of sin, and of the Jewish people. The first eleven chapters reach back to the beginning of history and deal with questions that we all ask:
Who made the world?
Where did we come from?
Why is there suffering and evil in the world?
In chapters 12-50 we move from the general (the human race) to the particular as we learn how God moved into the chaos and confusion and chose one man, Abraham. God directed him to settle in the land of Israel and he and his descendants, Isaac and Jacob, are known as the particulars (fathers) or founders of Israel. Jacob’s twelve sons are the beginnings of the twelve tribes. Through Joseph, one of his sons, the whole family settle in Egypt.
