Dr. Stafford Cripps
Many a times when we are in the midst of a crisis or a hopeless situation, we ask the question - Does God care..? Does He know my problem..? Does He know My name..? With the coming of computers we often feel depersonalized. These machines do not recognize us as individuals, but as numbers to be processed as rapidly as possible. The computer just won't "listen to us". When we feel this way, Jesus' words as recorded by John are especially comforting to us. He said, "I AM the Good Shepherd; and I know My sheep (John 10:14). We're not just numbers; in fact, He calls us by Name!
There's an interesting story of a mother who was asked by a census taker how many children she had. he responded, well there's Billy, Harry and Martha and - Never mind the names, the man interrupted. "Just give me the number!" The mother becoming indignant, replied, "They haven’t got numbers, they've all got names." That's the way it is in our relationship with the Heavenly Father. Paul writing to Timothy, gave the assuring word that "The Lord knows those who are His" (II Timothy 2:19). And remember, Jesus indicated that "The very hairs of your head are all numbered"(Matt 10:30). Further in Isaiah 49:15 we read - Can a mother forget her baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!
Do you feel neglected? Have friends let you down? Does it seem that even the Lord has forgotten you? If so take comfort in this: The Savior knows who you are and where you are and what you need. He also knows when you sit and when you rise! (Psalm 139:2) You are not alone!
King David knew about human tendency to forget all of His benefits (Psalm 103:2) and remember Him only in times of crisis. But God Who is faithful to His promise (Heb 10:23) says - "I have engraved you on the palm of My hand." (Isaiah 49:16). What more we want? Let me repeat - You are not alone! For our Sovereign Lord has promised - Behold I AM with you even unto the end of the world! (Matthew 28:20). And remember...you are not just a number to Him for He knows your Name!
You may be a number computers can Trace,
But Christ knows, your need, your name and your Face
