Psalm 139:5-10
David gives us words to talk about God's abiding presence across every nanosecond of life. He is there at conception, knowing us, purposing our lives, and making us — his fingerprints are on us. He is there in the daytime and night-time. He is there in good times and bad. He is there even as death surrounds us. And the means of his presence? The Holy Spirit. We cannot, and should not, ever want to be out of sight of God's Spirit or out of range of God's grace. How can we understand this concept? I don't think we are intended to understand it completely.
We are to take comfort in it, as Jesus reminds us so powerfully in John chapters 14-16 when he calls the Holy Spirit our Comforter/Counsellor/Advocate (John 14:26; John 15:26). We join with David and say, "This is too much, too wonderful — I can't take it all in!"
'Christ Will Explain Everything'
The woman said, "I know the Messiah is coming — the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." - John 4:25
For the second time in the Gospel of John, a woman seeking to meet an everyday problem tells us the truth about Jesus and his relationship to us. The first was Jesus' mother at the wedding celebration: "Do whatever he tells you!" (John 2:5) This time, it is the woman at the well: "Christ ... will explain everything to us."
Do you want to know about worship? Listen to Jesus. As this woman is about to learn, Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ of God. He does explain everything to us. Will we listen? Will we follow? Will we obey?
Psalm 23:6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
God is our Shepherd. Our destiny is tied to his goodness and mercy which he longs to shower upon us until he brings us home to dwell with him forever.
Prayer
. Almighty God, loving Father, thank you for placing the Gospel story in the real world where I live. Jesus, thank you for being a Savior who has come into my world and faced its toughest edges. Help me as I learn to be sacrificial, obedient, and humble so that I can be used to help others find your grace. In the name of Jesus, the Lord. Amen.
