The Word of God – Nehemiah 8:1-8

When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem in 444 B.C.,  Ezra was already there, instructing the people of God’s  law. When the work of rebuilding was completed, Ezra held a great “Bible conference” during the Feast of Tabernacles. The emphasis in chapter 8 is on “the Book” [vv. 1,3,5,8,18].
They  honoured God’s Word by standing when it was opened [v.5], listening when it was  read, and seeking to understand it when it was explained [vv.2-3, 7-8, 12-13].
They  rejoiced  at understanding the Word  [v. 12] and at obeying the Word [v. 17; James 1:25]

Questions in 1 Chronicles

19:3
the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out  the country and overthrow it?”

21:3
But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.  My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”

21:17
David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd, have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.  What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,  but do not let this plague remain on your people.”

Deuteronomy 10:21

“He is your praise; he is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes.”

He is our praise! The God who parted the Red Sea and supplied manna to the Israelites in the wilderness is also the God who did the most amazing miracles in us — he has turned our selfish hearts to do his will and turned our lives to do his eternal work in the world. Then, after doing those things in us, he has gifted us and empowered us to do those things he has placed in our hearts. He is our praise, the One we worship and the One who makes us worthy worshipers!
