Self-Denial
Matthew 16:24-26
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come
after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for me will find it.
26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole
world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
Self-exaltation
Matthew 23:12
For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever
humbles himself will be exalted.
Self-examination
Matthew 7:3-5
3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's
eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out
of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?
5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye,
and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
Selfishness
Luke 6:32-35
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to
you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them.
33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what
credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that.
34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment,
what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be
repaid in full.
35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them
without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you
will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
