The book of Proverbs

Where does wisdom come from? How can a person be truly “wise”? Read Proverbs to discover the answer to these questions and much more.

Respect and obey the LORD:

Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

Wisdom and commonsense were important in all ancient cultures. In Proverbs wisdom is seen as directly related to the LORD’s instruction. The truly wise person is the one who worships and honors the LORD and lives according to the LORD’s commands.

Sinners:

Proverbs 1:10

“My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.”
This refers to those who turn their backs on God or refuse to obey God’s teachings. Such people are often called “fools” in Proverbs, because their sins lead to death. (1:32; (:13-18).
Keep your land…rooted out:

Proverbs 2:11

“Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.12 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse,”

This may simply refer to losing one’s blessings (including land and possessions) because of foolish actions. It could also refer to Israel’s being able to keep the land the LORD had given them (Canaan). The people were warned that being disobedient or unfaithful to the LORD may cause them to lose the land (Deut. 28:63).

Wisdom:

Proverbs 8:11

For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

Gossip:

Proverbs 11:13

A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.

Sharp Words:

Proverbs 12:18

Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Wise friends:

Proverbs 13:20

He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.
