Isaiah 58:6-7
6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose
the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed
free and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide
the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not
to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Isaiah 1:17
learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
Jeremiah 22:17
“But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain,
on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion.”
Proverbs 31:8-9
8 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for
the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor
and needy.”
Psalms 82:4
Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the
wicked.
Psalms 72:12-14
12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted
who have no one to help.
13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the
needy from death.
14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for
precious is their blood in his sight.
Deuteronomy 15:7-11
7 If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the
towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted
or tightfisted toward your poor brother.
8 Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs.
9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh
year, the year for canceling debts, is near,” so that you do not show ill will
toward your needy brother and give him nothing. He may then appeal to the LORD
against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.
10 Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart;
then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in
everything you put your hand to.
11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I
command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy
in your land.
