'The Giver'

Jesus replied [to the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well], "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water."
— John 4:10

Over the last several days, we've been looking at Jesus providing living water to those who follow him. This water of life is a readily available. Jesus connects the promise of this living water with the Holy Spirit and says that it will be in us. Jesus' interaction with this Samaritan woman in today's verse reminds us that this water of life, the Holy Spirit, this living water, is not just for Jews or religious leaders.

All who come to Jesus can have this great gift. This passage anticipates three incredible passages that show the giving of the Holy Spirit to Jews (Acts 2), to Samaritans (Acts 8), and to Gentiles (Acts 10-11). The promise of the Holy Spirit is to all people whom God calls and who respond to Jesus as their Lord and Christ (Acts 2:33-39) — including to you and me. Let's share Jesus so those we love can share in this water of life!

Exodus 9:29

“Moses replied, “When I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands in prayer to the LORD. The thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so you may know that the earth is the LORD’s.”
When Moses confronted Pharaoh and was met only by the hardness of Pharaoh's heart, God sent the plagues. Why? Because God wanted Pharaoh to know that Israel's God wasn't just another god, but that the LORD was the Only True and Living God. The nations, the seasons, and the earth are his. All people must come to revere his name and receive his grace.

Himself Alone

Strange time for adoration, you say, to stand in God’s house by night, to worship in the depth of sorrow —it is indeed an arduous thing. Yes, and therein lies the blessing; it is the test of perfect faith. If I would know the love of my friend I must see what it can do in the winter. So with the Divine love. It is easy for me to worship in the summer sunshine when the melodies of life are in the air and the fruits of life are on the tree. But let the song of the bird cease and the fruit of the tree fall, and will my heart still go on to sing?

Will I stand in God’s house by night? 

Will I love Him in His own night? 

Will I watch with Him even one hour in His Gethsemane? 

Will I help to bear His cross up the dolorous way? 

Will I stand beside Him in His dying moments with Mary and the beloved disciple? 

Will I be able with Nicodemus to take up the dead Christ? 

Then is my worship complete and my blessing glorious. My love has come to Him in His humiliation. My faith has found Him in His lowliness. My heart has recognized His majesty through His mean disguise, and I know at last that I desire not the gift but the Giver.

 When I can stand in His house by night I have accepted Him for Himself alone.

Luke 9:13

He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish — unless we go and buy food for all this crowd."

I love the way Jesus gets his disciples' attention. "You feed them, boys!" Of course they knew that they couldn't! Yet Jesus showed them that if they brought their meager resources to him, they could do amazing things.

When the big picnic was over, each of them got to pick up a basket full of leftovers from the table of God's grace! Let's remember that it isn't the challenge or the resources that limit us; it's our unwillingness to bring what we have to Jesus and trust that he will do something with us to bless others in ways we couldn't have dreamed! (cf. Ephesians 3:20-21)

'The Holy Spirit Confirms Truth'

With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it. - Romans 9:1

Paul is sharing the most personal and convicting things in his heart about his love for the Jewish people, about the inclusion of Gentiles in the people of God, and about the message of Jesus for all people. He is not saying these things lightly. He is not exaggerating his deep emotions or the importance of these truths to his heart.

Jesus is a witness to what he says, and he is willing to own his words before the Lord. The Holy Spirit is not only behind the inspiration of these words but also confirms the truth of them. The message of Jesus — and its truth, timeliness, and touching power — have their confirmation in the Holy Spirit.

2 Chronicles 6:18

"But will God really dwell on earth with men? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!"

As Solomon dedicated the Temple, he realized that this tremendous accomplishment of great beauty was far too insignificant and small to house the Creator of the Universe. But, God did choose to dwell with mortals. That is what the life of Jesus is about (John 1:11-18).

God is awesome and beyond description, far too holy to be expected to associate with flawed human beings. As God, however, he has chosen to love us and come and live with us so we can return to him and share in his glory.
